No rocking chairs for these three:
Family House offers all the comforts of home. The flip side is that we have all the chores, too! And that’s where our three vital volunteers, Clara Gerber, Cynthia Kennedy and Dan Neu prove that many hands make light work.
"I was fortunate to retire young," says Cynthia, a special education teacher for 34 years. "The first year, it was intoxicating to be free. Then I needed more."

And as a Family House volunteer, more is what she got. More cleaning, scrubbing and washing! "I just wanted to do something to help and many volunteers can’t take all the stairs here." For Cynthia---who loves gardening, biking and skiing---that certainly is no problem.

Helping with the housework is another retiree, Clara Gerber, a
former doctor’s nurse. In addition to caring for her 90-year-old mother, she keeps the guest rooms sparkling, and even helps with our many mailings (including this newsletter). "There’s always something to do," says Clara, "and for me, being able to help is so rewarding."

Dan is our handyman, a critical position in this old Victorian home.  "The first time I walked through Family House, I thought, I kinda like this!" Dan retired from District 150 after 23 years, and also worked at Hiram Walker and at construction jobs. "Basically, I do repair work, anything they want, from painting furniture to fixing locks to plastering walls."

Since our guests stay here at very low (or no) cost, Family House operates on a very frugal budget. There’d be no way we could hire fantastic helpers such as Cynthia, Clara and Dan, much less pay them what they’re worth. We’re so grateful that volunteers like this are priceless!

BOUQUETS   from those who stay

Dear Family House Staff,
The Family House is a haven for broken hearts. I really believe angels live here. I was amazed in the beauty of the whole house, but your staff exceeds all expectations. Their love, warmth, and caring surrounded us with a safe and gentle feeling of safety. One cannot change the wind, but one can adjust the sails. Grateful thanks to all.
M.N. & V.B

Family House staff,
This place was a life saver for our family. A motel would have been so much more stressful. Here we were able to be together in a family setting. Thank you so much for being here for us all. This is a very special gift from god to us, and you all are a blessing.

J. C.

To the Family House employees and guests,
What a wonderful house & staff you
all are. Everything from the low-cost, the warm sympathetic staff, and the home-like atmosphere were more than anyone could expect under such trying circumstances.

Thank you all from the cleaning staff tothe office workers for being part of God’s provision for us in are time of need.
J. J.
