- Spring 2006 - 

     Paul and Shelli Slack welcomed the new year with a new addition to their young brood. Little Andrew joined the family, which already included Kaitlyn, 10; Ashley, 7; and Benjamin, 5.
     Andrew wouldn't be joining his brother and sisters at home in Ottawa any time soon. The day after he was born, the LifeFlight helicopter whisked the baby to the Children's Hospital at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center to undergo heart surgery.

      "Fortunately, we already knew about Family House since I had stayed here a couple of years ago" says Paul, who works for the Illinois Department of Transportation. "Family House is quite well known in Ottawa; we even ran into people from our hometown riding the shuttle." 
      Andrew's tiny heart has required several procedures, so Paul and Shelli have stayed at Family House much longer than anticipated. "The nurses in the ICU have been just wonderful," says Dad. "They even brought us Fanny May candy on Valentine Day. And I just can't imagine where we'd be without Family House. Probably, we'd have to take turns driving back and forth. And the expense of hotels and meals would add up in a hurry."
      "We're sure trying to hang in there," says Shelli. "Family House has been wonderful, very homey and that really helps. It's so beautiful here. One day we were sitting in the living room and wondering, if this were our house, where would we put the Christmas tree?"



Monday, July 10 Country Club of Peoria Fore fun! It's new! Family House's first annual Golf Outing includes an IS-hole round of play, prizes, cart, lunch, and more. Best of all, each foursome will include a club pro, among the best in the Midwest! Even though it's months away, this outing is filling up fast so don't risk getting tee'd off: sign up soon! 
As you might imagine. a 112-year old Victorian needs lots of TLC. Renovation and rehabilitation are constant and costly, so Family House board members like Gail Eaton and Johanna Christenson are thrilled to have help. On two Saturdays, April 22 & 29, a team of volunteers from OSF Saint Francis and PJ Hoerr generously devoted their time and talent to fixing up Family House. More volunteers are always welcome, of course.
