Who we are
Since 1985, Family House has provided an invaluable, irreplaceable service to the families of patients receiving care at local medical facilities. We are Peorias only hospital hospitality home.
Most of our guests come from outside the Peoria area and never expected to end up at Family House. Theyre here because of a medical emergency affecting a loved one. Some stay for a few days, some stay for weeks, even months. And because most of our guests cannot afford the cost of an extended hotel stay, Family House becomes an affordable home away from home during a difficult time.
- 40% of the families visiting Family House are here because of their children are hospitalized.
- 60% of the families stay while an adult family member is receiving medical care.
- Most patients are receiving specialized medical care including: cardiac, neurological, surgical and neonatal services.
- Guests of Family House have come from nearly every state in the United States.
- Our door is always open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day for families who are in need of a place to stay while their family member is hospitalized.
Our history
Family House began in 1982 as a collaborative project between the Junior League of Peoria, OSF St. Francis, Methodist Medical Center and Proctor Hospital. A board of directors was formed and Family House became a not-for-profit corporation.
In 1984, a century-old 9,000 sq. ft. home located at 1509 North Knoxville Avenue was purchased. Nine months of renovations, countless hours of manpower and truckloads of donated furniture and bedding turned the house into a home.
When the doors opened in 1985, Family House was staffed primarily by volunteers. The first full-time director was hired in 1991. Through Family House, the Peoria community has opened its arms to help more than 28,000 people receive shelter, comfort and a sense of community, which could not have been found elsewhere.
Today
In June of 2011, Family House moved into our new home at 1339 E. Nebraska Avenue.
These facilities allow us to offer additional guest rooms with expanded features,
up-to-date kitchen facilities, large dining room and multiple community rooms. Our new
house is handicap accessible, including an elevator. And we now have more on-site
parking for our guests and offer day services for waiting room families.
Our funding
Family House is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. The foundation of Family House is built upon the generosity of philanthropic businesses, foundations and individuals. This solid foundation has provided support through the donation of time, talents and financial support. Additionally, Family House hosts four annual fundraisers throughout the year.
While staying at Family House, guests are asked to pay $39 per night per room.
